The Herman Bouwer Intern Scholarship honors the extensive contributions of Dr. Herman Bouwer to the science of hydrology, AHS, and the existence of the AHS Foundation, which Herman was key in establishing in 2006. Dr. Bouwer was not only a Founding Director of the AHS Foundation, his generous personal donation seeded the original AHS Endowment which has now exceeded $300,000.
Known to many as “mentor and trusted friend,” Dr. Bouwer (1927–2013) was a charter member of AHS and the 1997 recipient of the AHS Lifetime Achievement Award. He earned his B.S. and M.S. in land drainage and irrigation from the National Agricultural University of Wageningen in the Netherlands and his Ph.D. in hydrology and agricultural water management from Cornell University. He served as adjunct faculty at ASU and UA and directed the U.S. Water Conservation Laboratory, Department of Agriculture, for 18 of the 43 years he worked there.
