2023 Intern Scholar

The Phoenix chapter has selected this year's Herman Bouwer Intern Scholar — Nicolas Garnand, who is soon to be a senior at Arizona State University.

A Barrett Honors College student, Nicolas is double majoring in environmental chemistry and geological sciences, with a minor in mathematics; he is also pursuing certificates in water resources and cross-sector leadership.

Nicolas says, “My passion for clean and accessible water led me down the path I am on and will continue to lead me in my career. After graduation, I plan on beginning my career and continuing my education with a graduate degree in geology with a concentration in hydrogeology and aquatic geochemistry.”

The Phoenix AHS Chapter will again accept applicants for the Herman Bouwer Intern Scholarship Program in the Spring of 2024. The program provides an opportunity for the selected student to gain experience with at least two water resources and environmental organizations in the Phoenix area. Monetary award for the student recipient is $3,500 for 200 hours of experience.

This program is open to students enrolled in a hydrology-related discipline at any Arizona college or university. Past participating organizations have included government agencies, private industry employers, and environmental consulting firms. The student may elect to obtain OSHA 40-Hour Hazardous Waste Operations Training as part of the internship.

Interested applicants should download a 2024 application packet from the AHS website. The deadline to submit 2024 applications will be announced. Interviews will be conducted in early May and the recipient will be announced shortly after the interviews.

About the Internship Opportunity

  • Duration: 200 hours (40 hours with each host organization; additional hours can be served at the discretion of the intern and organizations). This includes an optional OSHA 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations Training, which is required to enter hazardous waste sites.
  • Scheduling: Flexible around the student’s and participating organizations’ schedules. Student is responsible for coordinating schedules between organizations.
  • Completion Date: Internship must be completed by the end of the award calendar year.
  • Waivers: Student may be required to sign liability, confidentiality waivers, COVID policy, or submit to drug testing prior to service.

Internship Stipend

$3,500, paid out in increments, with a final sum to be awarded after completion of the internship
